A cupsole is a pre-moulded rubber cup that the upper is stitched into, which adds height and sidewall support, stiffens the flex and carries more cushioning under the foot. Vulcanised breaks in quickly and flexes; a cupsole holds its shape far longer and resists splitting at the toe.

Work cold and gentle. Mix a little mild soap into cool water, use a soft brush on the uppers and a firmer one on the midsole, then wipe with a clean damp cloth rather than rinsing under a tap. Skip the bleach: chlorine reacts with the leather finish and the rubber and drives exactly the yellow tint you are trying to lift. Skip hot water too, since heat softens the adhesives and discolours the midsole. Dry away from radiators and sunlight, stuffed with paper to hold the shape.
