It is the lacing. On an Oxford, the eyelet flaps are stitched underneath the vamp, so they meet edge to edge and cannot open wide — a clean, closed throat that reads formal but suits a high instep poorly. On a Derby, the flaps sit on top of the vamp and are stitched only at the back, so they open out and adjust. Same materials, same toe shapes; the seam under the laces tells you which is which.

Broguing is the perforation, not the shape. Small punched holes and serrated edges decorate the seams, and the pattern names the shoe: a full or wingtip brogue has a W-shaped toe cap running back along the sides, a semi-brogue has a straight cap with a punched medallion, and a quarter brogue keeps the perforation to the cap seam only. Because it is decoration, broguing turns up on Oxfords, Derbies and boots alike. The holes originally drained water.
