Aim for a few millimetres of footbed showing at both ends. Your toes should not hang over the front edge and your heel should sit inside the back rather than on the rim. Straps want to lie flat without pressing a line into the skin, and you should be able to slide one finger underneath. Leather footbeds and leather straps mould to your foot over the first week or so, so a snug new fit will relax slightly, but canvas webbing and nylon hold their length from the first wear.

Wipe the footbed with a barely damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, working with the grain rather than scrubbing, then let it dry away from direct heat or sunlight, both of which crack leather. For odour, a little baking soda left on overnight and brushed off in the morning works well; darker marks are better handled with a proper leather cleaner than scrubbed at. Cork footbeds should never be soaked; seal them occasionally with cork sealer to stop the edges crumbling.
