Heel height settles a sandal before any strap does. Raised styles lead the range, running from a low block through kitten and stiletto heights to wedges and platforms, some fastened at the ankle, others held by a single band across the toes. Flat pairs sit the foot level and lean on their strapping instead, in thong, crossover, gladiator and fisherman constructions that either wrap the arch or leave it open.

Backless styles ask nothing of the ankle at all; a flip flop splits the toes with a post, while a slide passes one wide band over the instep and is stepped into. Uppers run through smooth and grained leather, suede, raffia and woven cord; footbeds are moulded or padded, and soles range from a thin stitched leather edge to a moulded rubber tread.

How do European sandal sizes convert to US and UK?

The three systems step in different increments, so the conversion is rarely exact. As a guide, EU 36 is roughly a US 6 and a UK 3, EU 38 a US 8 and a UK 5, EU 40 a US 10 and a UK 7. Half sizes exist in European sizing but are not offered on every style, and open styles have far less give than a closed shoe, so if you fall between sizes, measure your foot length in centimetres and match that figure instead of guessing upward.

What is the difference between a wedge and a platform sandal?

A wedge carries one solid piece of sole from heel to toe, so the whole foot is supported and the shoe rocks less as you walk. A platform raises the front of the shoe on a separate slab while keeping a distinct heel behind it, which cuts the effective height: a 100mm heel over a 30mm platform feels closer to 70mm underfoot. Wedges tend to be steadier; platforms keep a heel's line.
