A Belgian loafer is built on a slipper pattern but finished as a shoe. It sits very low on the foot, exposing more of the instep than a penny loafer does, and carries a small bow at the throat. The construction is light and unstructured, usually over a thin leather sole. A true house slipper has a soft sole meant only for indoors, whereas a Belgian is made to be worn out, though the light build wears through faster than a welted shoe.

If you go sockless, use a no-show liner with a heel grip, because direct contact drives sweat straight into the leather or suede and shortens the life of the shoe.
