Everything here holds the foot without a fastening, so the vamp and the throat opening do all the work. Loafers rely on a plain saddle, a slotted penny strap, a bit or a tassel across the instep to hold the foot steady. Belgian and slipper styles cut lower and lighter, carrying a small bow at the throat and sitting close to a house shoe.

Driving shoes wrap rubber pebbles up the heel and stay flexible; mules and backless slides drop the counter entirely. Some come lined in shearling or felt for indoors, others sit on a leather or lightweight rubber sole that handles pavement.
