The base is jute rope, coiled and pressed into a wedge, then stitched to the upper. Traditional pairs finish there, which suits dry ground and light wear. Most modern men's espadrilles add a thin vulcanised rubber layer under the jute so the sole handles pavement, damp and repeated use. You can usually tell the two apart by checking the edge of the sole for a dark rubber rim.

Canvas uppers and a jute sole both give a little in the first few wears, so a pair that feels snug across the widest part of the foot usually settles rather than stays tight. Length itself will not change. Aim for a fit with no heel slip and a small amount of room at the toe, and size up if you are between sizes or have a high instep.
