A duffel is chosen by the number of nights it has to cover. Around thirty litres handles one or two and still travels as a carry-on; forty to forty-five is the weekend size, and the one most people end up reaching for; fifty and above takes a week, or the kind of load boots and outerwear make. Because the body is soft, a duffel compresses into a space where a hard case simply will not.

Carry and opening decide the rest. A full-length top zip opens the bag flat; end pockets, shoe compartments and internal dividers keep the contents from becoming one pile.
