Men's Boots

Shaft height sets the character of a boot, and the way it closes sets how it goes on. Ankle boots stop just above the bone and lead the range: Chelsea styles pulling on through elastic side gussets, lace-up derby and cap-toe boots closing over the instep for a firmer hold, and zip-side designs splitting the difference. Above that, a taller shaft climbs the calf and stiffens the whole silhouette, while chunkier lugged builds trade a slim line for grip and a heavier tread.

Uppers are usually smooth calf, suede or oiled nubuck, the last of which takes weather better and marks less obviously. Soles decide the rest: leather for a dress boot, a stacked or crepe wedge for something softer underfoot, and moulded rubber lugs for real grip. Goodyear-welted boots can be resoled, while cemented ones generally cannot.

What does Goodyear welted mean, and does it matter?

A Goodyear welt is a strip of leather stitched to both the upper and an inner rib, with the outsole then stitched to that welt rather than glued straight to the upper. It makes a boot heavier and stiffer at first, but the sole can be replaced several times without disturbing the upper, and the extra layer keeps water out at the join. A cemented sole is lighter and more flexible, and is usually replaced rather than repaired.

How do you care for suede and nubuck boots?

Brush them dry with a crepe or brass-bristle brush after each wear, always in one direction, to lift the nap and shift dust before it settles in. Treat a new pair with a suede protector spray held about 20cm away and let it dry for a few hours. Blot rain rather than rubbing it, and dry away from radiators with paper inside to hold the shape. A rubber eraser block lifts most scuffs.
