Begum is the slingback: a closed, pointed front with a strap around the back of the heel, which makes it the more covered and the more wearable of the two. Gilda is a sandal, built from straps across the foot and often set with crystal, so far more of the foot shows. Both sit on the flared heel. Begum suits a narrower foot; Gilda's straps give a little more room to move.

Satin marks easily and does not recover from water, so keep the shoes away from damp and lift any dry mark gently with a soft brush rather than rubbing at it. Never sponge satin wet. For crystal, wipe the settings with a dry cloth and avoid perfume, hairspray and cleaning sprays, which dull the stones and can loosen the adhesive. Store each pair in its dust bag, upright, away from direct light.
