Jude Neale

A pair of jeans is decided by its cloth long before the fit chart matters. Jude Neale works from custom-woven indigo denim milled in Italy and Turkey, with further fabric from Japan and the United States; weight, slub and the way a twill recovers after a day of wear are all settled at that stage. Washes are built with ozone rather than heavy bleaching, and the stretch twill is woven with recycled elastane, which is what gives it recovery: a leg that springs back instead of bagging at the knee.

The Canadian label runs the same logic across everything else it makes. Raw and rinsed jeans sit beside faded and vintage-cast washes; waffle-knit long sleeves, hemp camp shirts and polos fill in around them; jackets are cut to match the denim. It is a wardrobe built on cloth and quiet detail, not on a logo.

How does the Axe fit run?

Axe is the label's slim straight denim cut: close through the seat and thigh, then falling in a clean line to the hem — slim, but not skinny. Because it is woven in a stretch twill instead of a rigid one, it gives with movement and settles back afterwards, so most people take their usual waist rather than sizing up.

How should raw denim be washed the first time?

Leave it as long as you comfortably can, because raw indigo fades where you crease it and early washing softens that contrast. When you do wash, turn the jeans inside out, use cold water and a small amount of mild detergent, skip fabric softener entirely and hang them to dry away from direct sun. Washed and vintage finishes are already set, so they can go in more often.
