Raw pairs are the ones that need thought. Unwashed denim is deliberately sold snug and relaxes as it takes the shape of the body, so the size that feels correct in the fitting room is often the size that ends up loose a month later. Washed and stretch pairs behave normally and can be taken at your usual measurement. Waist and inseam figures on the individual product page are more dependable than converting from another label.

Wash cold, and wash less often than instinct suggests. Fine-gauge wool and cotton knits hold their shape best hand washed or run on a wool cycle, then pressed flat in a towel and dried on a flat surface rather than a hanger. Cotton shirting takes a normal cold machine wash but keeps its finish longer if it comes out slightly damp and is ironed from there. Heat is what shortens the life of both, so skip the dryer.
