Matelassé is a quilting technique: the leather is stitched into a raised, padded grid so the panel gains body without a stiff frame or heavy lining. Worked on nappa, which is already soft, it gives bags such as the Wander their rounded, slightly collapsing shape and lets them hold form while staying light. It is also why the surface catches light in squares rather than reflecting flat across the panel.

They are cut from supple leather or satin on a last that stays structured through the toe and heel while remaining flexible underfoot, which is what separates them from a soft-soled slipper. Ribbon ties are the recognisable finish, threaded through the topline so the collar can be drawn in. Because the shoe is meant to sit close to the foot, expect a snug feel at first that eases as the leather relaxes.
