Artisanal Denim
Denim keeps a record of how it was made, and that record is what holds this selection together. The pieces gathered here are picked for evidence of the hand: finishing that varies slightly from one pair to the next, wear placed rather than printed, hems and seams closed with intent. It is a view that rewards reading construction first and silhouette second.
Begin with the wash. Fading, whiskering and abrasion worked in by hand sit at angles a flat print never quite manages, and they keep moving with wear instead of staying fixed. Rigid cotton gives almost nothing early on and moulds slowly over months, while denim woven with a little elastane is comfortable from the first hour and holds its line through a long day. The leg from knee to hem is the other decision, settling whether a pair breaks over a boot or finishes clean above a low shoe.
