It usually covers fabric woven on slower looms, seams and hems finished by hand or on vintage machinery, and wear effects created through sanding, scraping or ozone work applied pair by pair rather than stamped uniformly across a run. The practical result is small variation between pairs, and fading that develops along the lines the maker set rather than staying where it started.

Rigid cotton carries no elastane, so it feels stiff for the first few weeks and gradually takes the shape of whoever wears it. Creases form at the knee and hip and stay there, which is how the strongest fades develop. Denim cut with a little stretch skips that break-in entirely, sits comfortably from the first wear and keeps a slim leg from looking strained, but it fades far less dramatically and can slacken through a long day.
