Each number stands for a category rather than a season — 22, for instance, is footwear, which is why Tabi shoes carry it. Earlier pieces used a completely blank label instead, with no numbers on it at all, so a plain white tag is not a sign that something is missing.

They are deliberate, and on most pieces they show through to the outside. Four white stitches at the corners of the tag hold it on loosely enough that the label can be cut away entirely, leaving the garment unbranded. Over time the stitches themselves became the recognisable mark, so a piece with four small white bar tacks at the back neck still reads as the house's even after the tag has gone.
