Velvet
Soft is easy to promise and hard to keep. Lightweight jersey usually gives up its hand after a few washes — thin at the shoulder, stiff through the body — because the softness was a finish rather than the fibre. Slub cotton and brushed modal work the other way round: the texture and the hand come from the yarn itself, which is why these knits tend to read better on the tenth wear than on the first.
That is an argument for buying this kind of thing carefully rather than often. Velvet's women's pieces run to easy tees, long-sleeve tops and soft layers in French terry and fleece, cut close to the body without gripping it and finished plainly enough to sit under a coat or stand on their own. Keep them out of the dryer and they keep their shape. The point is never the look of any single piece; it is that the good ones stay good.
