The appeal of this label has never depended much on who it was drawn for. John Varvatos is an American menswear house built on a rock aesthetic — leather worn back to the grain, over-dyed cotton, antiqued hardware — and it works in a colour range that rarely strays past black, charcoal, bone and olive. Those are qualities that travel well past the label sewn into the collar.

What makes the pieces work borrowed is the construction. Jackets are cut lean with a lightly built shoulder rather than a rigid one, knitwear and shirting run long and narrow, and boots and belts are finished to look handled from the first wear. Sizing follows a men's block throughout, so the fit reads oversized and dropped through the shoulder in the way a borrowed jacket is supposed to.
