Where should a belt sit on the waist?

It depends on what the belt is doing. At the natural waist, the narrowest point above the hip bone, a belt shortens the torso and lengthens the leg, which suits a dress or a tucked shirt. Worn lower on the hip it reads relaxed and leaves the torso long. Over a coat, aim for the natural waist and let the fabric blouse slightly above the strap rather than pulling everything flat against the body.

How do woven and plain leather belts differ in wear?

A woven strap is built from many fine strands, so it flexes with movement, stays comfortable through a long day and softens rather than creasing where it folds. Plain leather is firmer, holds a more defined line at the waist and develops a patina where it doubles back at the buckle. Leather is the better choice for holding a coat or a heavy trouser closed; woven is easier to live in over knitwear and jersey.
