Close, but never gripping. The knit itself holds the piece in place, so the waistband should sit flat rather than dig in; if it is leaving a deep mark by the end of the day, the size is too small. Look for fabric lying smooth across the seat with no rucking at the leg opening, and for the leg of a boxer brief to stay where it is put rather than riding up the thigh. Caught between two sizes, take the larger one, since fine knits recover well but are easier to distort by over-stretching.

Gauge and recovery. A very fine knit adds almost no visible volume, so under a dress shirt it does not print through the way a heavier cotton tee does, and the fabric moves moisture away rather than holding it against the skin. Worn on its own it holds a clean line across the shoulders instead of hanging off them. Thin is the easy part; staying thin, opaque and in shape after months of wear is what the knitting is for.
