It follows the jika-tabi, the split-toe footwear long worn for work in Japan, where the division between the big toe and the others gives grip and lets the foot flex. The house adapted that division into a fashion silhouette and has carried it across boots, loafers and sandals ever since. The split is structural rather than decorative, which is why the shape survives translation into heels, flats and rubber-soled versions alike.

How should I care for painted or treated leather?

Treat the finish as the fragile part. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and let the leather dry away from radiators and direct sun, both of which lift and crack a surface treatment faster than wear does. Skip pigmented polishes, since they sit on top of the existing finish rather than feeding it, and skip solvent cleaners entirely. Cedar shoe trees hold the shape between wears and draw moisture out of the lining without heat.
