Issey Miyake - Pleats Please
Some clothes are recognisable by a logo; these are recognisable by a texture. Fine, sharp folds run the length of every piece, set permanently by heat after the garment has already been cut and sewn, so the pleating follows the seams rather than crossing them. The fabric that results is light, stretchy across the fold, and almost impossible to crease in any way that matters.
The practical consequences are the point. Pieces pack down to nothing and come out of a bag ready to wear; they wash at home and dry quickly; they need no pressing and rarely need a fastening, since the folds provide the stretch. Shapes are kept plain and generous — straight bodies, wide legs, clean hems — and the colour is applied flat and strong, so the surface reads as relief rather than as pattern.
