Wash cool on a gentle cycle, ideally inside a mesh bag, with a mild detergent and no fabric softener; softener coats the fibre and can slacken the folds over time. Skip the tumble dryer, and instead hang or lay the piece with the pleats running straight, where it will dry within a few hours. Do not wring or twist it. Bleach and high heat are the two things that permanently damage the pleating.
