Merino fibres are much finer than standard wool, which is why they sit against the skin without prickling and why a lightweight merino layer regulates temperature so well. That same fineness makes the yarn a little more delicate, so merino prefers gentle washing and flat drying. Against cashmere it is more resilient and less prone to pilling, which makes it the better choice for something you plan to wear weekly.
