Texture does the work at Chloé that colour does at other houses. The Paris label, in business since 1952, holds to a narrow warm palette — cream, sand, tan and black — and lets the making supply the interest instead: braiding, crochet, fringing and eyelet, used as construction rather than trim. It is why the pieces read as handworked without ever looking homespun.

The clothes are drawn to be layered. Little is cut close enough to rule out a second piece over or under it, and the cloth is chosen to soften with wear rather than break down. Footwear follows the same logic: soles are substantial, and straps are braided or buckled so they keep their shape. The leather goods are made in weights that take handling. It is a wardrobe meant to be used rather than preserved.

How can you recognise Chloé hardware and leather?

The hardware reads as saddlery rather than jewellery: buckles, studs, rings and horseshoe shapes, usually in a warm gold tone instead of bright silver or chrome. Leathers are chosen for texture over shine, so expect a pebbled grain, a brushed suede or a soft slouch rather than a mirror finish. Stitching is often left visible as a design line, and heels are stacked and solid rather than fine.

What does prêt-à-porter mean?

Prêt-à-porter is French for ready-to-wear: clothing produced in standard sizes and sold finished, as opposed to haute couture, which is made to measure for an individual client. Until the middle of the twentieth century the two carried very different status. Houses that applied couture-level fabric and cutting to ready-to-wear collapsed that gap, and Chloé was among the first in Paris to do it.
