A narrower strap, close to the width of a suit trouser's belt loops, is the right call for tailoring; it sits flat, takes a slim buckle and stays invisible under a jacket. Denim and chinos have deeper loops and heavier fabric, so a wider strap balances them and can carry a chunkier buckle without looking mean. If a belt bunches the loops or leaves visible gaps either side, the width is wrong before anything else is.

The old rule is a useful default rather than a law. Matching the belt leather to the shoe keeps the eye moving up the body without an interruption, which is why brown with brown and black with black still reads correctly under tailoring. Buckle metal is the part worth being stricter about, since it should agree with a watch case and any shoe hardware. Woven and multi-colour belts sit outside the rule entirely.
