Alashan Cashmere

Cashmere earns its place in a man's wardrobe by disappearing. A fine-gauge scarf under a coat collar, a vest beneath a jacket, a light sweater that takes the edge off an over-cooled office without adding a layer anyone can see: the fibre's advantage is that it delivers warmth at a thickness which does not change the line of whatever is worn over it.

The men's range is built around that logic rather than around decoration. How should a cashmere sweater be stored over summer?

Fold it, never hang it, and put it away clean. Hanging stretches the shoulders permanently, and moths are drawn to the traces of skin and food left in unwashed knitwear, so wash or clean the piece before it goes into storage. Keep folded sweaters in a breathable cotton bag or a sealed box with cedar rather than in plastic, which traps moisture. Check on stored pieces once mid-season and shake them out.

Is cashmere warm enough to wear on its own?

For its weight, cashmere insulates better than wool, which is why a fine sweater can replace a much bulkier layer indoors and in mild weather. What it does not do is block wind or water, so on a genuinely cold day it works best under a shell or a coat rather than as the outer layer. A vest is the efficient version of this, giving core warmth with the arms left free under a jacket sleeve.
