A.P.C. menswear is a uniform in the useful sense of the word: a small number of shapes, repeated, that stop requiring a decision once you own them. The straight jean in raw Japanese denim sits at the centre of it. Around that the label keeps plain shirting, crew and V-neck knits in flat colours, and outerwear derived from workwear with the ornament taken out.

The workwear lineage shows in the details that survive: pockets sized to hold something, plain hardware, cotton twill and canvas working alongside the denim. Nothing beyond that gets added. Because the cloth is left dry rather than treated, a garment tends to look better after a year of wear than it did new, and the marks it picks up belong to the person wearing it rather than to a finishing plant. What is A.P.C. outerwear like?

It comes out of workwear rather than tailoring. Expect straight, boxy shapes cut in cotton twill, canvas, denim or wool. Pockets are functional, hardware is plain, and decoration is almost absent, so the weight and hand of the cloth do the work. These are cut to go over a shirt or a knit rather than to sit close to the body, so take your usual size unless you intend to layer heavily, and check the chest and shoulder measurements listed on the product page.

How do A.P.C. shirts and knitwear fit?

Both sit closer to a classic cut than to anything oversized or slim. Shirts run straight through the body, so they hang cleanly untucked without gathering at the waist. Knitwear is worked at a fine to medium gauge meant to go under a jacket, so it reads trim through the chest rather than roomy. If you are between sizes, size up in the knits and stay true in the shirting, and use the flat measurements listed on each product page as your reference.
