Take a garment you already own in a similar shape, lay it flat and measure it across the chest, the waist and the sleeve, then compare those numbers with the measurements listed on the style you are looking at. That is more reliable than converting between size systems, particularly with jackets, where lining, padding and hardware all affect how much room is really there.
