The horsebit is riding hardware, two rings joined by a straight bar, the piece that sits in a horse's mouth. Gucci began in Florence as a leather goods and luggage maker serving a horse-riding clientele, and adapted the shape into a metal ornament laid across the vamp of a moccasin. It is drawn from saddle girth webbing, the woven band that secures a saddle to a horse, and entered the house vocabulary as a decorative stripe running down bags, luggage and shoes. The classic version is green at the edges with red through the centre. It appears in several forms depending on the item, woven as a band on canvas and trims, worked in leather, or set into a shoe upper, so the width and the placement vary more than the colours do.
