Issey Miyake is a Japanese fashion designer who is known for his innovative and unique fashion designs. He was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938 and studied graphic design and fashion in Tokyo.
Miyake first gained recognition in the fashion industry in the 1970s for his avant-garde clothing designs, which often incorporated non-traditional materials such as plastic and paper. He launched his eponymous fashion label in 1971 and began showing his collections in Paris in the 1980s.
Miyake has been the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to the fashion industry, including the Fashion Group International’s Career Achievement Award in 1999 and the Praemium Imperiale Arts Award in 2006. He is also known for his work in the field of fragrance and has created several popular scents. Today, Issey Miyake continues to design under his namesake brand, which offers a wide range of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories, including his signature pleated designs.
